Le Palace of Fine Arts se situe dans le quartier Marina de San Francisco. C'est un des plus jolis endroits de la ville et il est très prisé par les couples pour faire leurs photos de mariage.
Il a été construit en 1915 pour l'exposition internationale de Panama-Pacific. Il devait être démonté après l'exposition mais il a eu tellement de succès qu'une fondation a été créée pendant l'exposition pour le sauver. Mais étant prévu juste le temps de l'exposition il avait été construit en matériaux peu solides et il est donc tombé rapidement en ruine. Il a été complétement démolit puis reconstruit de façon permanente en 1965. Le hall situé derrière accueillit des peintures impressionnistes (d'où son nom) puis l'exploratorium (un musée des sciences) jusqu'en janvier dernier.
Le plan d'eau situé devant accueille des grenouilles, des tortues, des cygnes, des oies, des ratons laveurs... et le jardin est planté d'eucalyptus.
The Palace of Fine Arts was one of ten palaces at the heart of the Panama-Pacific Exhibition. While most of the exposition was demolished when the exposition ended, the Palace was so beloved that a Palace Preservation League was founded while the fair was still in progress.
As the Palace had been saved from demolition, its structure was not stable. Originally intended to only stand for the duration of the Exhibition, the colonnade and rotunda were not built of durable materials. As a result of the construction and vandalism, by the 1950s the simulated ruin was in fact a crumbling ruin. In 1964 the original Palace was completely demolished, with only the steel structure of the exhibit hall left standing. The buildings were then reconstructed in permanent.
In 1969 the former Exhibit Hall became home to the Exploratorium interactive museum. Today, Australian eucalyptus trees fringe the eastern shore of the lagoon. Many forms of wildlife have made their home there including swans, ducks (particularly migrating fowl), geese, turtles, frogs, and raccoons.
