Une Toulousaine à Yellowstone: Jour 5, Artist Paint Pot, Mammoth Hot Springs et route vers Bozeman

     Dernier jour et dernières photos de Yellowstone. Mammoth Hot Springs est encore différent de ce qu'on a vu jusqu'à présent. Les eaux chaudes ont créé des terrasses calcaires dont certaines sont colorées par la présence d'oxyde de fer.
     Les eaux chaudes de Mammoth Hot Springs ont la particularité d'attirer les wapitis. Une partie des terrasses de cette construction naturelle sont moins chaudes (environ 45°C) que les sources chaudes, les fumerolles et les geysers (de 75°C à 500°C). Les waptitis y ont établi dans la zone un territoire distinct, y compris pour l'élevage des petits. L'hiver, où les conditions sont relativement rudes, ces derniers se baignent dans les bassins thermaux des terrasses ; une stratégie de survie qui a surpris les biologistes et qui a poussé ces derniers à considérer les Mammoth Hot Springs comme un écosystème à part entière.

     Je pense que Yellowstone est une des choses les plus extraordinaires à visiter. Voir la terre qui est "vivante", observer les animaux dans leur écosystème naturel, les paysages grandioses... Je n'ai qu'une envie c'est d'y retourner (en plus on n'a pas vu d'ours, alors rien que pour ça...).
     Si vous voulez y aller, quelques conseils:
     Allez y hors saison: on a vraiment apprécié le fait qu'il y ait peu de monde. Préparez votre séjour à l'avance: les hôtels étant peu nombreux, ils sont complets jusqu'à 1 an à l'avance. Et surtout prévoyez un bon appareil photo: ce n'est pas un zoo, les animaux sont dans leur habitat naturel et donc sont souvent (très) loin.


     Last day and last pictures of Yellowstone. Mammoth Hot Springs is still different from what we have seen so far. It is a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine.It was created over thousands of years as hot water from the spring deposited calcium.
      The warm waters of Mammoth Hot Springs attract elks. The water in some parts of these terraces are less hot (about 113 °F) than the hot springs, fumaroles and geysers (165 °F to 930 °F). The waptitis have established in this area a separate territory. In winter, when conditions are harsh, they bathe in the thermal pools terraces; a survival strategy that surprised biologists and led them to consider the Mammoth Hot Springs as an entire ecosystem.

     I think that Yellowstone is one of the most amazing things to visit. Seeing the earth "alive", watching animals in their natural ecosystem, beautiful landscapes ... I only want one thing: to go there again (and we have not seen bears, so just for that ...).  

     If you want to go, some tips:
      Go out of high season: we really enjoyed the fact that there were few people. Plan your trip in advance: there are few hotels, they are full 1 year in advance. And especially plan to have a good camera: it is not a zoo, animals are in their natural habitat and are (very) often far away.
