La Nouvelle Orléans est la plus grande ville de Louisiane, située sur les bords du Mississipi. Fondée en 1768 par les colons français, son nom est choisi en l'honneur du régent Philippe, duc d'Orléans.
La Nouvelle-Orléans devient dès 1910 un lieu de bouillonnement artistique et musical. Foyer de la musique afro-américaine, elle voit émerger de nombreux artistes de blues et de jazz, comme Louis Armstrong et Sidney Bechet.
